The following is a list and summary of the emergency calls that have been answered by Bantry Inshore Search & Resuce Association since it was founded in 1987 to October 2001. Details of more recent activities are available on the Press Releases page.
28/6/87 Wreckage sighted off Glenlough. Boat trailered to Gearhies for launch. Wreckage identified as mass of seaweed and marine débris
22/7/87 2 small sailing craft reported to be late in returning from a trip to Glengarriff. Boat and crew mobilised and preparing for search when Garda reported that all were safe.
1/2/88 - 2/2/88 Man reported missing at Kilcrohane. 7 members of BISRA searched beaches and cliffs in vicinity of reported incident. Weather too bad to launch boat. Approx 3 miles of coast searched based at Gulladoo. Body found at 1230 hrs on 2/2/88
5/2/89 Small white punt reported to be in possible trouble between Whiddy Point and Adrigole. Boat launched and area searched, nothing found.
20/7/89 Report of wind surfing board seen near Snave Bridge. Boat prepared for launch but search called off after Garda located a man asleep on Snave Beach.
25/9/92 Motor launch "Natalie" with 2 crew on board in difficulty outside Beaches. Towed to Bantry Pier, no casualties reported.
23/7/93 Call out to injured person during Bantry Regatta. Injuries to hand after collision between 2 boats. Casualty taken by lifeboat to Bantry Pier and on to Bantry Hospital.
31/10/93 "MV Silean" struck rock and grounded. Lifeboat stood by until refloated and checked for damage.
22/1/94 Smoke and flares reported off Rooska. Boat trailered to Gearhies. "MV Sluana" taken in tow by "MV Silean". Lifeboat not required.
25/1/94 Small mussel boat overturned at eastern end of Chapel Island. Man found sitting on bottom of upturned boat, rescued and returned safely to shore. Sea conditions reported rough.
27/10/94 Man reported missing in Gortnakilla area. Lifeboat launched daily from October 27 to November 5 to search area of South Beach to Gearhies. Body found at Adrigole on 5/11/94.
9/11/94 Called out by Garda. Flare reported between Abbey Point and Rinnbeg. Area searched but nothing found. Reports that flare was launched from land.
12/7/95 Yacht "Mug Fly" in distress due to cracked/broken centre hoad.2 crew on board, no injuries, towed to Gearhies Pier.
15/7/95 Called by Garda to assist with an incident on Whiddy Island.
29/8/95 Called to investigate 2 youths reported in trouble in a dinghy of Eagle Point. False alarm.
8/9/95 Called out to transport doctor to Whiddy Island to attend a man trapped under a fallen crane.
11/9/95 Motor boat "Just Four" adrift north of Bantry Pier. Engine failure. 2 crew on board, towed to Bantry Pier.
10/2/96 Stood by to assist Garda regarding a body sighted in the slob.
28/6/96 Called out to recover boat "PJOY" adrift from Abbey Moorings.
14/12/96 Called out to recover boat adrift in Gearhies.
6/1/97 Called out to small boat reported to have left Snave Pier and appeared to be in trouble off Eagle Point. Failed to locate boat after thorough search of area. Boat reported taken without owner's consent.

Boat later re-launched to search again as concern grew for missing person. Missing person located at 1820 hrs, search called off.

24/6/97 Called out to transport Doctor to attend seriously injured Belgian tourist in a field on Whiddy Island.
26/7/97 Called out to yacht "Curlew" in distress off quarry at Leaghill. Mast broken, rigging tangled in propeller. Boat towed to Bantry. 2 crew on board, no injuries.
17/8/97 Boat called while out on exercise to half decker with engine trouble. Boat towed to Bantry Pier. 3 crew on board, no injuries.
25/8/97 Called out by Garda to assist in search for missing person in Ballylickey area.
30/8/97 Called out to local punt with single occupant, Bantry side of Sheep's Head. Boat located and towed to Gearhies.
3/9/97 Called out to assist Garda in search for man reported missing from Bantry Hospital. Body located at western end of pier and recovered by lifeboat.
30/12/97 Reports of flares off Ballylickey. Verified as fireworks not flares.
31/12/97 Reports of flares off Ballylickey. Verified as fireworks not flares.
1/1/98 Called out to boat in distress 300 yards north of Gearhies Point. Engine failure. Lifeboat recalled after report that engine had started and boat made its own way to Gearhies Pier.
4/4/98 Called out by Garda after flare sighted north of Chapel Island. Boat located with one person on board and escorted to Bantry Pier.
2/8/98 Yacht at Chapel Island disabled. Towed to Abbey moorings.
18/8/98 Yacht "Seodlin" run aground east Chapel Island. Stood by for rising tide to refloat. 2400 hrs, yacht towed clear of rocks and headed for moorings under own power.
30/10/98 Called out following report that Mr. Pat Courcey had fallen overboard from the 14' boat the "Bilko" between Town Pier and Whiddy Pier, approx 200 yards North of Bantry Pier and 150 - 200 yards west of Railway Pier.

Body located on 6/11/98, 500 yards from the pier by "Blue Harvester". Body recovered by Bantry lifeboat and transported to Railway Pier.

During this emergency, the boat was manned by a rota of lifeboat crews throughout daylight hours and the search was co-ordinated from the pier by Lifeboat Launch Officers. A total of 60 boat hours was recorded and an estimated 350 man-hours.

6/3/99 Called out by Garda to investigate white flare seen west of Cove Bay. No evidence found, 2 propellers damaged by bottom contact.
22/3/99 Called out to "Harbour Queen" reported taking water between Beaches and Whiddy. Stood by, casualty towed in by "Blue Harvester".
27/3/99 Called out by Garda in response to white flares seen in Cove area. Boat not launched. Beach walked in both directions from Pier Point to Cove, no evidence of any activity.
26/7/99 Called out to assist 3 children in small boat needing assistance (lost paddles) off Eagle Point. Boat taken in tow by local boat and accompanied back to Eagle Point by lifeboat. No injuries.
8/8/99 Called out to transport doctor to Whiddy Island to attend a lady injured in a riding accident. Casualty transported to Bantry Pier in lifeboat and met by ambulance for onward journey to Bantry Hospital.
7/10/99 Called by Garda in response to white flares sighted north west of bathing box on Abbey Road. Also reports of flares from the Oil Terminal in the area of the SPM. "Baltimore Bay" dispatched to investigate. Harbour Master contacted IMES who confirmed reports of several sightings of flares of various colours along the West Coast, which were assumed to be caused by a meteorite storm.
2/9/00 Called out by Garda in response to red flares sighted in the area of Geranes. Lifeboat located a 28' half decker with 2 persons on board (including a 4 yr old child). Boat taken in tow to Whiddy Bank Pier.
25/9/00 Called out by Garda to assist a boat aground on rocks in Snave area. Casualty was a 30' half decker with 2 persons on board. Refloated on rising tide. Lifeboat stood by but no assistance required.
23/10/00 Called by Garda in response to a report of a man in the water in the vicinity of the Blue Pool, Glengarriff. Boat launched in under 6 minutes. Helicopter backup requested and Castletown RNLI lifeboat and Coast Guard Cliff and Coastal Rescue Unit were also mobilised. 3 lifeboats and a helicopter were used in the search. A body was located and recovered after almost 4 hours, 750 metres from the position reported missing.
10/3/01 Called out by Coast Guard to search shore lines in Upper Bantry Bay for missing female. Search called off by Garda after casualty located inland.
21/5/01 Called out to transport doctor to Whiddy Island to attend a patient in urgent need of treatment.
26/5/01 Called out while on exercise to drifting dinghy in inner harbour. During this recovery, the lifeboat was again called out to "Homebrew II" which had broken down with 5 persons on board, one adult and 4 minors. "Homebrew II" and dinghy towed back to sailing club pier. Noted that none of the occupants  were wearing lifejackets, and "Homebrew II" was not equipped with a radio.
9/6/01 Called out by Garda to a boat adrift in Bantry Bay 200 metres from the pier with a body in the boat. Lifeboat not launched as casualty had sobered up and rowed himself ashore. Not wearing a lifejacket.
8/7/01 Called out by Garda in response to a report of an upturned dinghy in Glengarriff Harbour. At 1008 hrs a body was recovered and brought to Bantry. It was reported that there may have been a second person in the dinghy. Lifeboat refuelled and returned to Glangarriff where a second body was recovered at 1112 hrs and also brought back to Bantry. Neither of the casualties had been wearing lifejackets.
11/7/01 Called out by Coast Guard after a windsurf board and sails had been found on the strand in the Cove area. Lifeboat launched and began upwind search of area. Owner of board found safe and well at home having tea, having left the board on the strand.
22/7/01 Called by Coast Guard to report of yacht in trouble off Bantry Pier. Casualty "Pollyana" taken in tow close to rocks near bathing box with fouled propellor on lee shore and towed to Bantry Pier. Both adult occupants were wearing lifejackets.
29/7/01 Called by Harbour Master to a boat on the rocks in the Glengarriff area. Crew assembled but launch called off when casualty reported on Denish Island.
22/8/01 Called by Coast Guard to a punt with 2 persons on board adrift and sinking in the Beaches area. " females aged 16 were rescued unhurt from an 8 foot punt which was leaking and being swept out to the south west. Landed at Lifeboat slipway and examined by doctor. Both were wearing lifejackets.
10/9/01 Called by Coast Guard to stand by after a man was reported in the water off the strand north of the Railway Pier. Man recovered by Garda.
7/10/01 Called by Coast Guard to stand by to assist Castletownbere RNLI lifeboat in search for men washed off rocks at Gortinakilla. Boat launched with doctor on board. 1650 hours, body recovered by Castletown lifeboat and returned to Castletownbere.
30/10/01 Called by Coast Guard in response to sighting of a white flare in the vicinity of pier viewed from Cove area. Boat launched and searched of inner harbour and shore line walk. Nothing found.
