Protective Helmet
A rescue site can be a hazardous place requiring the crew to operate in unfamiliar surroundings, in dangerous seas and in close proximity to other rescue vessels and aircraft. These helmets provide protection from head injuries that can result from a man overboard situation; from coming alongside other vessels; or from assisting with winching operations in co-operation with a rescue helicopter for example.
The white reflective surface helps to attract attention, and the transparent visor provides facial protection from the wind and rain, which would otherwise impair visibility and increase the time taken to reach a casualty in adverse weather conditions.
When funds allow, these helmets will be fitted with radio headsets to enable the crew to communicate with each other more easily whilst at sea. Without radio headsets, crew members need to shout above the noise of the outboard engines and the wind to make themselves heard whilst engaged in a search and rescue operation or on exercise.
The new helmets for use on the MST 750 Rescue Craft incorporate an in-helmet intercom system that allows easy communication between the cox and his crew.
